Edith Piaf wrote the lyrics to this song inspired by her feelings for Marcel Cerdan, who was her one true love. On September 14, 1949, Edith introduced the song to her repertoire at Le Versailles in New York, performing it for the first time before Marlene Dietrich and her New York audience. On the evening of October 28, when Piaf learned of the plane crash involving Cerdan, Edith sang the song at Le Versailles. Although no one forced her to do so, she did it for Marcel, to cry out her pain. She fainted at the last words of the song.
