As part of continuing to improve my Miata's track readiness, I decided it was time to upgrade to some stronger, extended length studs. Enter ARPs 100-7719 studs that can be used for the front and back of 90-93 Miatas. If you have a 94-05 Miata, you will need two sets of these for the front and two sets of part number 100-7720 for the rear. Not sure why that changed, but there you go.
The fronts are fairly easy to do. You don't even need to remove the caliper and rotor. You simply turn the hub so the stud you want is toward the open side of the brake dust shield. Then, you tap it out with a sledge hammer and pull the stud out of the back. From there, you rotate the hub so the, now empty, space is aligned to the center of the brake caliper. You can then insert the new stud from behind there, exploiting the gap between the caliper and the hub (there is no dust shield in the caliper area. You can put the old stud in backward from the front so that it serves as an indicator you can feel with the new stud. That just makes it easier to find the opening.
With that, slide a stud installation tool or stack of washers over the new stud, tighten that down to the hub using one of your old lug nuts (they need to be open end lug nuts) and tighten that down with an impact wrench. Once the head of the stud seats against the back of the hub, you are good to go! I will cover rears in the next episode, as that is a different process.
