Hopwood Hall is a magnificent Grade II* listed historic house in Middleton, Greater Manchester. In 2021, Hollywood actor and author Hopwood DePree took on restoring his ancestral home along with Rochdale Council and a mighty team of local volunteers.
The 600-year-old building features original timbers dating back to 1427, Jacobean carvings, historic fireplaces and evidence of areas constructed by English avant-garde architect Edgar Wood.
The house has been on our Heritage at Risk Register since the late 1990s, but over the past five years, DePree has been working with Rochdale Council to restore his ancestral home and transform it into a thriving art and cultural venue.
To further support Hopwood Hall, the Culture Recovery Fund awarded the Hall project a grant of £368,000, which, along with additional funding from Rochdale Council, will help to stabilise the building’s structure so students, volunteers and the community at large can safely use the hall.
