Hualin town (Northeast China) is my hometown, but it is also the epitome of the heavy industrial cities of Northeast China in the last century, which carries the vibrant vitality of the late 1990s to the depression of the new century. Baths are the common name for public bathhouses, and "bathing
in the Northeast" is an important way of life in Northeast China, as well as an emotional bond and spiritual support for bathers. However, due to the severe economic downturn in recent years, Tianchi Bathhouse is the only remaining bathhouse in Hualin town.
It was a special presence, like a warm home where people gathered to tell stories about their neighbourhood and wash away the mixed emotions of life. However the Tianchi Bath house is also facing closure, which means that Hualin town will have no place to socialise from now on. Behind the closure of Tianchi Bathhouse is the reverse urbanisation, population loss and ageing of the North East due to the economic downturn.
I designed a documentary film. I got involved in the life inside the Tianchi bathhouse, observing, recording and presenting the realities of the Tianchi bathhouse from an objective point of view. It shows the 20 years of perseverance and the ups and downs of the owner's life.
