The Department of Clinical Mental Health Counseling is proud to offer specialized training in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, providing students with the opportunity to integrate traditional counseling skills with an innovative, experiential approach to treatment. This training emphasizes the therapeutic use of the human–horse relationship to foster emotional growth, self-awareness, and healing for clients. Through both classroom instruction and hands-on experience with horses, students gain practical knowledge in assessment, treatment planning, and ethical practice within this unique modality.
Within our 60 credit CMHC degree it is possible to complete a concentration in Equine Assisted Therapy. The requirements for the concentration include two elective courses (CMHC 670 Equine Assisted Psychotherapy which is offered in a week long intensive format in March of each year, CMHC 671 Equine Assisted Interventions or CMHC 660 Independent Study in Clinical Mental Health Counseling) AND at least one semester of clinical experience in a setting where Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is used as a treatment modality.
