Akshobhya Buddha, known in Sanskrit as Akshobhya, is also referred to as the Immovable Buddha or the Unshakable Buddha. He is the Buddha of the East among the Five Dhyani Buddhas and resides in the Abhirati Pure Land of the East. The name "Akshobhya" in Sanskrit means "unshakable," which is why he is called the Immovable Tathagata.
According to the classical texts (such as the Akshobhya Buddha Sutra translated by Lokaksema during the Eastern Han dynasty and the Golden Light Sutra translated by Dharmakṣema during the Northern Wei dynasty), Akshobhya Buddha made a great vow when he was still a Bodhisattva. He vowed to diligently practice and save all sentient beings without being shaken by anger or hatred. Because of this steadfast determination, Lokaksema Tathagata prophesied that he would become a Buddha in the Eastern Abhirati Pure Land in the future, under the name Immovable Tathagata.
When Akshobhya Buddha vowed to practice the Bodhisattva path, he faced great challenges. Lokaksema Tathagata informed him that practicing the Bodhisattva path is very difficult, as it requires not harboring anger toward any sentient beings, including humans and animals. However, Akshobhya Buddha remained resolute, making a vow to never give rise to anger, and eventually attained Buddhahood. He became the embodiment of being without anger and without rage, hence the name Akshobhya Buddha.
In ancient times, many female practitioners often made vows to be reborn as men in their next life or to transform into men in their current life. This was due to the low social status of women at the time, leading to feelings of inferiority. However, Akshobhya Bhikkhu had a different perspective. He believed that women were not inherently impure and emphasized that as long as women's physical suffering could be alleviated, they could achieve spiritual attainment just as men could. Therefore, Akshobhya Bhikkhu vowed that in his Buddha land, women would not experience the pain of menstruation, pregnancy, or childbirth. In the past, women often prayed to Akshobhya Buddha for a safe and smooth delivery.
It is said that when Akshobhya Bodhisattva attained Buddhahood, the sky filled with bright light, and the earth shook. All sentient beings stopped eating and drinking but did not feel tired. They lived in harmony and respected each other. There was no desire in heaven and on earth, and Akshobhya Buddha's light illuminated the entire universe.
The land of Akshobhya Buddha is highly adorned, with tall Bodhi trees made of seven treasures, and gentle breezes playing harmonious music. In this land, there are no three evil paths, no diseases, and no crimes. The ground is flat, without valleys or rubble, and the trees bear abundant and naturally delicious food, which can be enjoyed endlessly. There is no king in this land, as Akshobhya Buddha is the Dharma King.
According to Buddhist scriptures, reciting the "Akshobhya Buddha mantra" can help people escape danger, bring auspiciousness, and provide great blessings. When someone is near death and their mind is in turmoil, just seeing the "Akshobhya Buddha mantra" will prevent them from falling into the evil paths. If someone recites this mantra and spreads it widely, they will accumulate immeasurable merit.
