Understanding the surrounds in which Kalypso is situated, Dare Property Group, Mim Design and MHNDU have combined efforts to create a relaxing seaside apartment in Tamarama, New South Wales. Positioned on a crest, Kalypso is a new build that has replaced an old Art Deco building that was once a backpacker hostel. When MHNDU came up with the design of the relaxing seaside apartment block, it wanted to reflect these stylistic references on the exterior as a historic nod. In its completed form, Kalypso has easy access to the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk and a small yet popular inlet that has become a well-liked surf beach. Moreover, the mixed architecture of the surrounding homes and buildings further complements the multi-residential form.
Due to the apartment’s position, Kalypso is afforded views to the north, east and south, which allows sunlight inwards year-round. The relaxing seaside apartment also enjoys sea breezes during summer, enriching the apartments’ connections to the elements. For the design and architectural objective of the apartment, the team wanted to target a high level of luxury and amenity through form and material. When the team began to work on the project, they imagined the people that would want to live in these apartments and found that it helped to inspire the material selection. Though the luxurious finishes and products enhance the interior, it is the amount of space that is given to each relaxing seaside apartment that makes them feel more like individual homes. It was important to MHNDU, Mim Design and Dare Property Group to capture the elements of Tamarama in every corner of the apartment. One such element is upon the roof where copper has been employed. Selected for its durability, the material provides a connection from exterior to interior design.
Leading the interior design was Mim Design, which brought in the comforting touches that further helped the relaxing seaside apartment to resonate with the surrounds. Stepping into the multi-residential building, owners walk down a compacted corridor that mirrors the waves of the ocean. Each level also glimpses out to the ocean, which serves as a reminder of location. Alongside the apartments, Kalypso also features a penthouse and sub-penthouse that offers three bedrooms. Located on the north-east corner, the sub-penthouse welcomes with softened walls that lead into the large living zone. From here, views of the Pacific Ocean take hold and the living, dining and kitchen zone is bathed in natural light from morning until afternoon. For the hub of the apartment, the kitchen acts as both a working space and gathering spot. There is also a featured cellar that enriches the owners’ experience by anchoring the dining room and opening out the view line from the hallway. Using marble in the kitchen that represents ocean whitewash, Mim Design has also employed natural stone finishes and copper detailing in the cellar. Together, Dare Property Group, Mim Design and MHNDU have created a luxury multi-residential apartment block that offers deep connections to the beachside surrounds.
