VW Beetle Oil Change & Valve Adjustment with Re-usable Silicone Gaskets

It's been just over the 2 year mark since Nathan first bought this Baja Bug. A car that he and his dad, our tech Sam, have built from the ground up, well most of it anyway. The engine was a spare long block that came from a friend and while it had a locked up top end, the bottom end appeared to be in good shape. So Sam & Nate cleaned it up externally (but not out well enough internally apparently), put a new top end on it and have been using it ever since. With all the work, short self imposed deadlines, and life in between, the engine has just been chugging along, without much in the way of maintenance. That gets proven as soon as the drain plug is removed, ick! Sam & Nate have put less than 600 miles on this top end, but the bottom end should have been flushed out long ago.

While the pair is in the midst of an oil change, Sam guides Nate through a valve adjustment on one cylinder head before letting him proceed on the opposite side. Then to button things back up, Sam & Nate install some new, re-usable silicone valve cover gaskets and oil sump plate gaskets. While they aren't cheap, if the gaskets are truly re-usable they could well be worth it. Especially if they seal well, time will tell.

To finish off the video, the repairs from our previous outing where a lost IRS pivot bolt caused some problems are covered. Fortunately the damage wasn't too severe and only took a few hours late one evening. Most importantly the pair took the opportunity as a lesson learned.
