The human respiratory system is a complex network of organs and tissues that work together to facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment. 1 2 It's responsible for breathing, which involves inhaling oxygen-rich air and exhaling carbon dioxide-rich air
Nose and Mouth: These are the entry points for air into the respiratory system. The nose warms, humidifies, and filters the air before it reaches the lungs.
Pharynx (Throat): This is the passageway for both air and food. It connects the nasal and oral cavities to the larynx.
Larynx (Voice Box): This contains the vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound. It also prevents food and liquids from entering the trachea.
Trachea (Windpipe): This is a tube that carries air from the larynx to the lungs.
It's lined with cilia, which help to trap and remove dust and other particles from the air.
Bronchi: The trachea branches into two bronchi, one leading to each lung. The bronchi further divide into smaller and smaller tubes called bronchioles.
Lungs: These are the primary organs of the respiratory system. They are spongy, air-filled organs located in the chest cavity. The lungs are responsible for gas exchange, where oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is released from the bloodstream.
Alveoli: These are tiny air sacs located at the ends of the bronchioles. They are surrounded by capillaries, where the exchange of gases occurs.
Diaphragm: This is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. It plays a crucial role in breathing by contracting and relaxing.
Process of Respiration:
Inhalation: The diaphragm contracts, pulling downward and expanding the chest cavity. This creates a negative pressure in the lungs, causing air to rush in through the nose or mouth.
Exhalation: The diaphragm relaxes, reducing the volume of the chest cavity.
This forces air out of the lungs.
