ggplot2: Quick Intro to the Grammar of Graphics - Three Basic Layers

ggplot2 is the de-facto standard for creating visualizations in R. It is based on the Grammar of Graphics - but what is meant by that? We'll take a quick look at the main ideas: How graphics are built up from layers of grammatical elements, and how variables are mapped onto aesthetics.
We focus on the three basic layers that are required for a valid plot: Data, Aesthetics, and Geometries, and provide a minimal code example.

The concept that Wickham implemented in ggplot2 is based on Leland Wilkinson's 1999 book "The Grammar of Graphics".
