The Cleopatras is a 1983 BBC Television eight-part historical drama serial. Written by Philip Mackie, it is set in Ancient Egypt during the latter part of the Ptolemaic Dynasty (staring with Ptolemy VI) with an emphasis on the Cleopatras.
The story of the Third Book of Maccabees (5-6), written in expansive Greek prose, the Jewish work recounts the story of Ptolemy IV Philopator who is saved by Dositheus, a Jew by birth who changed his religion. The rest of the book focusses on Ptolemy and the Jews, as follows: the king's unsuccessful attempt to enter the Temple in Jerusalem; his insistence that Jews participate in local pagan rites of Dionysus; the planned punishment of Jews whom Ptolemy intended to massacre by dispatching five hundred drunken elephants to trample them in Alexandria's hippodrome.
