On March 28, 2025, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was flown to The Hague and handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC), sparking protests and counter-protests from Filipinos both in the Netherlands and in the Philippines. Duterte, who turned 80 that day, faces charges of crimes against humanity for orchestrating a brutal anti-drug campaign during his presidency (2016–2022), which allegedly led to over 30,000 extrajudicial killings, mainly targeting poor, urban youth. His arrest followed a secretly issued ICC warrant and appeared to have been facilitated by souring relations with current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who had once allied with Duterte's daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte. The arrest shocked many globally due to its swift and discreet nature and is seen as a potential precedent for future ICC cases against leaders like Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu.
