This video responds to the common confusion in vocal videos between a vocal bias to brightness, thin or light phonation, mask placements, open vowels etc and squillo or projection. The basic claim is that a dark sound is inefficient and will not project over an orchestra, while a light bright sound has more singer's formant or squillo and will easily be heard.
This is demonstrably false. If it were true baritones and basses would never be heard, and leggero tenors would be louder than dramatic tenors. Harmonic strength has nothing to do with the aesthetic choices to sing brightly or darkly.
This is the start of the Gabriel Hudson series where we examine practically and theoretically the many myths of vocal pedagogy.
