The focus of this holy day is the expiation of sin. The remedy for sin is the blood of a substitute offered unto the Lord upon the prescribed altar. The Mosaic Law makes this abundantly clear. Moses writes:

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for your soul" (Leviticus 17:11).

The rabbis understood blood was critically important for providing atonement for sin. The Talmud points out that when Scripture commands that either the "laying on of hands" (Leviticus 1:4), or "waving" of the offering (Leviticus 14:21) was to accompany the sacrifice and either one of these rites was omitted, the offeror still obtained atonement for sin (Menahoth 93b).

In the Talmud we read: "Because Scripture says, 'And I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement;' (Leviticus 17:11) once the blood has reached the altar, the owners are forgiven" (Zebahim 26a).

In the second Servant Song of Isaiah (Isaiah 49:5-8; the other three songs are 42:1-25; 50:1-11; 52:13-53:12) we learn of God's messianic purpose in providing salvation to Israel and the nations. The Servant is none other than a reference to Yeshua, Israel's promised Messiah.

Israel's Messiah will become "a covenant for the people." He will restore Israel to the Land of Israel which the Lord has promised her, and restore the Land to his people. And he will extend the gift of salvation which he provides through his blood atonement to his people Israel and they will "be free!" (Isa. 49:8; 53:8, 10-12).
