Bagua Zhang’s ever changing single palm change

單換掌 Single Palm Change being at the core of the practice of all systems of Baguazhang has come to have countless permutations but the core principles are generally the same. No matter what it looks like on the outside the goal of changing direction while deflecting and or attacking - opening, closing, spiraling through the body from the feet through the spine and out through the upper limbs is at the center of all single palm change practices. Here Xu demonstrates a myriad of single palm change applications that while they look different in application are all based on the same strategies that come out of the single palm change in his lineage of Yin style Baguazhang.

This video comes from the early 2000s when he was about 60 and groups of foreigners would come to China seeking to learn from him. He had no qualms about often even going to their hotel rooms to demonstrate as he was eager to teach and foreigners didn’t mind hands on application. One way Xu showed his fondness for a student was by constantly demonstrating on them - the pain and beating the student endured was Xu trying to teach them through a hands on approach, while trying his best not to hurt them, transmitting information that isn’t so apparent from watching but instead observing proprioceptively through physical experience. This is an old school Chinese teacher method of showing favor and trying to teach a specific student they like while other students watch from the sidelines trying to mimic the movements. That way the teacher can make money off the people watching and the one they are fondly beating up 😂 . If they like you, they will constantly be demonstrating on you and not so much the other people. Embrace it. One day you may not have them to guide you in person but those memories of physical teaching, as long as practiced on, stay with you forever.
