Simulating the appearance of clothing is difficult due to the complex interplay
of lighting between the yarns and fibers. Traditional methods based on
SVBSDF models or volumetric models fail to model transmitted lighting and
cannot adequately simulate the local shadowing and reflections from the
fibers. Procedural models based on fibers do not scale to larger pieces of
clothing and these models have not demonstrated the ability to simulate the
complex anisotropic lighting transmitted through many types of clothing.
In this paper we introduce a practical model for woven clothing that models
the cloth as replicated pieces of interwoven yarn. We model the structure of
the yarn at the ply level, and simulate the local appearance of fibers making
up each yarn. Our model accounts for both light reflected of the yarn as
well as transmitted lighting, and it is able to match measured data for both
reflection and transmission. Furthermore, it scales to large pieces of clothing
and is stable as the clothing is deformed.
