Chickenpox | Varicella Zoster Virus | Pathogenesis, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Chickenpox is a very common childhood viral condition that causes widespread eruption of vesicles. Upon infection, the varicella zoster virus has a very long incubation period and infective period, which we discuss in this lesson. After the incubation period, there are specific stages of skin lesion development that occur with chickenpox. Diagnosis of chickenpox can be verified through a variety of laboratory methodologies. Treatment options depend on the age of the patient. Finally, we discuss some of the important complications of having chickenpox that occurs in some patients.
