This film is of a lecture given by Gareth Morgan on 4 December 2024 at Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield. Gareth draws on his personal experience of having worked at Stanleys in Sheffield and outlines the fascinating history of a company many in the UK might think of as having British origins based in Sheffield. That view is quickly dispelled as its origins in the USA are outlined but the establishment of a UK arm in Sheffield in the 1930s is then explored.
Stanleys continued to manufacture in the city history in the city for a very successful period after the 2nd World War expanding significantly. However, by the early 1990s cost pressures meant a complete withdrawal of manufacturing from the city after 1998. Although the name of Stanley continues as a significant international force, strengthened by a merger with Black & Decker, Sheffield no longer plays a part in the company's fortunes.
