Super Mario Bros. 3 [NES] Playthrough #06, World 6: Ice Land

This is video #06 in my playthrough of Super Mario Bros. 3. Mario now goes through World 6, Ice Land. It has also ironically been called Winter Wonderland, but this hellhole is far from wonderful. The slippy slidy stages will have you pulling your hair out, and this world has THREE forts.

Level 6-1 should hopefully get Mario accustomed to the slippery surfaces. This stage is loaded with Ptooies.

Next, Mario visits 6-2 (time index 1:41). This is an auto-scrolling stage with cloud-like platforms. Some but by no means all surfaces are slippery.

Then, Mario goes through 6-3 (time index 3:11). Another platform-hopping stage, but fortunately this one is not auto-scrolling.

Afterward, Mario tours Fort 1 (time index 5:09). This is likely the easiest fort in the world. Clearing this fort opens the way forward.

Mario then goes through 6-4 (time index 6:47). Another nice, icy platform-hopping stage.

Next, Mario goes through 6-5 (time index 7:54). This stage is a little tricky. In the main cavern, it requires grabbing the Green Koopa-Troopa shell, flying up to the exit, and using the shell to knock out the Nipper plants. This requires Raccoon or Tanooki powers.

The next stage on the hit list is 6-6 (time index 9:29). What better thing to do in a frozen world than take a dip in a chilly underground lake?

Mario then takes on two pairs of Hammer Bros in this world (time index 11:39). One of the pairs in the middle section has a Star Man. The one near Fort 1 has a Hammer.

After that, Mario visits 6-7 (time index 12:47). This is another side-scrolling aerial stage. To make this world's White Toad's House appear, Mario must collect at least 78 coins here, which is a truly challenging task. Collecting the coins at the end requires Fire Mario.

On the way to the White Toad's House, Mario blasts the last pair of Hammer Bros. and gets their Jugem's Cloud (time index 15:14). The White Toad's House contains an Anchor. Probably not worth the trouble in 6-7.

Mario also visit's the Toad's House north of 6-5 to collect a Hammer Suit (time index 16:05). A very powerful item.

Then, Mario goes through Fort 2 (time index 16:26). This is a pretty challenging fort because it is 100% slippery. Even Boom-Boom's chamber is all slippery.

Mario next goes through 6-8 (time index 18:11). This is a refreshingly temperate stage.

Afterwards, Mario goes through 6-9 (time index 19:26). This is another frigid underground waterway. The exit is a pipe above a Venus Fire Trap.

Then, Mario goes through 6-10 (time index 21:07). As Fire Mario, Mario can collect a free Hammer Suit. First, he has to thaw some Munchers. Then he can turn them to coins by climbing a nearby vine and hitting a P switch so he can go down the pipe. The Hammer Suit is an amazing power-up once you know how to aim the hammers.

Next, Mario journeys through Fort 3 (time index 23:45). Mario tries out his new hammer powers here. They can take out just about every enemy except the Roto Discs.

Finally, Mario moves on to the castle (time index 26:04). Oh, the poor king! Time to tour another Doomship. Like Iggy, Lemmy's Doomship eschews artillery in favor of Flame Throwers. There are tricky blue bolt lifts here. At the end, Mario finds Lemmy, the clown prince of the Koopas (time index 27:34). Lemmy balances on a ball and releases balls that bounce around like Wendy's rings. These, fortunately, are safe to jump upon.

The king is cute! The princess's letter refers to the Whistle in Level 1-3. She has enclosed a useful P-Wing.

Just one more world to go in the Mushroom Kingdom! (I don't count World 8 as being in the Mushroom Kingdom.)
