About the workshop
This workshop is divided into 10 sections, with Sebastian taking us through different effects, tools and resources (glissando, staccato, slides, ornaments, phrasing, etc) that will add to our understanding and performance of Piazzolla’s music. While teaching, he will refer to Piazzolla’s works including Otoño Porteño, Invierno Porteño, Primavera Porteña and Verano Porteño (the Four Seasons), Adios Nonino, Triunfal, Los Pajaros Perdidos, Cite tango, Libertango, Violentango, Wisky, Calambre, Café 1930 and Oblivion.
Participants with their guitars should be ready to try these effects with Sebastian. Time permitting, he will also listen to a few participants perform Piazzolla’s pieces, and answer their particular questions.
About Sebastian Pompilio
Sebastian Pompilio is an Argentinian classical guitarist who has dedicated many years researching, arranging and performing the music of Astor Piazzolla for the guitar. Born in Buenos Aires, he lived most of his life close to the home of the legendary Fernando Suarez Paz, the world’s leading tango violinist and member of Astor Piazzolla’s New Tango Quintet from the 1970s. Sebastian grew up listening to this music, and through meetings with Feranado Suarez Paz and Maestro Daniel Binelli (bandoneon), he received priceless knowledge about the life and music of Piazzolla.
Winner of the National Guitar Competition (2001), Sebastian has 2 degrees in music – from Buenos Aires Juan Jose Castro Conservatory of Music and Luis Gianneo Mar del Plata Conservatory of Music (the city of Piazzolla’s ́birth). He received additional education by travelling through Europe, visiting conservatories, festivals and receiving workshops and masterclasses from the greats.
Over the years, Sebastian has been the founder member of Camerata Argentina de Guitarras (the biggest guitar orchestra in Argentina) and with them he has recorded 3 CDs, one dedicated to the music of Piazzolla. He has also formed a guitar duo with Maestro Daniela Rossi, together recording a CD called “Invierno Porteño” with Sebastian’s arrangements of the Piazzolla’s Four Seasons and a Bach suite. He is a new member of Martinez Zarate Quartet, a legendary Argentinean quartet originally formed in 1968.
Sebastian has performed in concert halls across the world, including Latin America, Europe and Asia in concert halls as Teatro nacional Cervantes, C.C.Kirchner, Usina del arte, Saint Martin in the Fields (London) and Esplanade (Singapore).
Recognising his dedication to the form, some Argentinian tango composers have dedicated pieces to Sebastian including Carlos Wernicke (Invencion and milonga) and Oscar Vidal (1st tango concert for guitar and orchestra).
