The second part of Saturday includes more high speed action in downtown Goshen, IN.
Train 1.
2:47pm EB 14Q
Elkhart - Bellevue, OH
Todays 14Q has 141 cars and is led by BNSF power. It's pretty normal for the Bellevue trains to have foreign power, and today's train looks about normal, though with more gons and empty coal hoppers than i usually see. The last few times I have seen this train: 1:11pm yesterday, 3:19 on 8-21-09. And very often times this train runs in 2 sections.
Train 2.
2:58pm WB I3T
Extra CP Autorack
I'm not sure where the CP trains originate and head to, though it probably will terminate in Chicago. This could have come from a canadian auto plant, or from Detroit. I3T is an extra autorack (I replaces the 2 and means extra 200 series train). There used to be a regularly scheduled CP auto train symboled 29T that ran daily on this line, but was lost early in the recession. It was nice to see an autorack as they are kind of rare on this line nowadays, and 6 hours later I catch another extra CP auto symboled W6T this time an eastbound. I3T has 35 loaded autoracks, and moving through Goshen near 60 mph. Those red units are beautiful I say.
Train 3.
3:07pm NB 170
Birmingham - Elkhart
I don't know much about train 170. It is a northbound only train with no counterpart, and doesn't seem to run everyday. The times that I have seen it has been a big boy, though, and today it had 124 cars. To get from Birmingham to Elkhart, this train travels through Chattanooga, Knoxville, through the "Rathole," into Cincinatti and north on the New Castle line to Muncie where it swings onto the Frankfort line then onto the Marion Branch at Alexandria, IN.
Shortly after I stopped recording 170, 23K flew by on track #1 with its usual mix of UPS vans and stacks.
Train 4.
4:06pm WB M5N
Extra Conway - Elkhart
This location is further west and just east of CP 412. M5N is an extra Conway, PA to Elkhart train, gliding into through Goshen and will take the siding at CP 415 to get into the yard. Its a big train, 100 cars, and is kinda junky looking with all its gons and tanks, though there is a reefer in there and some empty lumbers on the end. I could hear a NB whistling its way through Goshen as this was being taped, and right before this train passed I heard another WB 21Z calling the signal at m.p.410 on #1 track. How exciting!!!
Train 5.
4:09pm WB 21Z
Rutherford - Chicago 63rd
21Z flies past at about 60mph right on time through Goshen and will soon overtake M5N. Today it has the usual block of containers on the head end and 64 hot trailers. With 2 UPS vans at the front, this train is all truckers trailers and looks great. Last few time I have seen this train: 4:35 yesterday, and 3:47 on 8-21-09. Most Impressive, Norfolk Southern.
Train 6.
4:11pm NB 311
Marion, IN - Elkhart
Daily train 311 is much smaller than yesterdays train and has only 58 cars compared to over 100 the day before. It's also through about 6 hours sooner, but looks roughly the same with yet another UP loco on the point of a Marion Branch train.
Thanks for watching and please comment.
God bless!
