Cold and rainy this morning. Hondo and I woke up at 5 AM to try and beat the rain, we definitely did not beat the rain! Lol we got soaked as soon as we stepped out of the tents! For 3 miles we hiked up the mountain in the dark! Holding onto the glimmer of hope that there would be food and shelter a plenty at the end! It’s really how hiking goes. When you get out, in less than awesome conditions. You need to look forward to the next upside to keep your morale up. Once you reach it, you think of the next thing and then the next thing. It helps keep you motivated to take those baby steps to the finish.
It was hilarious, because once we reached the top of the mountain we were getting to we saw some light in the distance through the trees. I remember looking at Hondo and going, “Is that the town? We’re almost there to food!” but as we got closer, we realize it was too headlamps. Haha
We both laughed, saying that we couldn’t believe there were other people crazy enough to be out on the mountain in that kind of weather that early in the morning! Turned out to be two fellas that we would come to know as DocJ and Schmitty. They were also heading to the café!
The café was incredible! All my clothes were soaked, so I bought a nice fresh shirt and way more food than I should’ve eaten! lol
No exaggeration when I say the next several miles were very uncomfortable! Hahaha
The café is called Iron Ridge Café at mm 38 and it should be a must stop if you’re hiking. Service was good and the food was amazing and affordable. We also met a bunch of really cool people there and had some really fun conversations both on hiking and local stories!
After we took 4 1/2 hours at the café to charge devices and dry out, we set off again! The next few miles were road walking, but it wasn’t bad as most of the roads were back roads in very rural areas. Then, after a few miles, we finally got to the woods again! We were both super excited because the next thing to see was a waterfall! And it did not disappoint! The only downside was all the food started hitting my stomach while ascending the mountain, I realized how much trouble I was going to be in. Because that next section was pretty heavy in foot traffic, meaning not really many areas to have a makeshift privy. lol
Thankfully, I was able to make it all the way through and to our next campsite without bursting my gut! Hahaha
I’m pretty sure Hondo thought this was hilarious when I told him..
All in all, this was a really fun day filled with all kinds of challenges, discomforts and memories!
