On a breezy and partly sunny St. Patrick's Day, we ventured out to the Woodstown Central Railroad for the first time. The "Mannington Limited" excursions were led by former Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines EMD GP38-3 (former GP38) number 2003, equipped with a 5-chime Leslie horn. Ironically, we did not intentionally plan on chasing a railroad with green locomotives for St. Patrick's Day.
Woodstown Central Railroad is a division of SMS Railroad Company and began operations in late 2022. The young tourist line has an exciting future as SMS continues the finishing touches on their 0-6-0 steam locomotive (number 9) to operable conditions. For more information on this newer tourist railroad, please visit: https://woodstowncentral.com/
SLRS EMD GP38-3 no. 2003 was originally constructed for the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines as a GP38 in December 1967. In 1976, when PRSL became part of Conrail, 2003 was renumbered to 7663.
In the early 1980s, 7663 was sold to the Bangor & Aroostock Railroad and renumbered to 91.
In 2009, the locomotive would be rebuilt as an EMD GP38-3 and renumbered back to 2003 by SMS. Today, 2003 continues to work both freight and passenger trains on the SMS system.
Happy St. Patrick's Day from us here at East Penn Railfan Productions!
