Wood chips are a cheap and effective material for creating compost & healthier soil. But there are some types of wood that you need to watch out for, like the one I show you in this video. Woods like this are resistant to decay and may not make the best addition to a compost heap.
Luckily, these woods are easy to identify, and they still make a fine mulch for other purposes.
Spreading wood chips helps to create a more acidic, fungal dominant soil, the kind that trees and perennials like. This is the type of soil you would encounter in a forest, where wood has been decaying for a long time and the soils are rich in a variety of fungi.
By spreading wood chips and letting wood rot, you help to sequester carbon, you nourish your plants, and you help protect biodiversity.
Let me know what you're doing with wood chips down in the comments!
