How to paint a grisalle portrait | PART 3 - with Jack Ford

Join us for a portrait painting course all about grisaille painting. The colours you will need on your palette are – Titanium White, Raw Umber and Ivory Black.

You can omit the raw umber if you want to keep temperature variations to a minimum – raw umber is a warm brown colour. You can stick to just white and black on a first attempt to focus solely on values.

Teaching this course is Jack Ford, a portrait painter from London. Jack Ford studied at the Arts University Bournemouth before moving to Florence to study under internationally renowned painter and teacher Charles H Cecil. During this time, Jack continued with his artistic practice, working in both wet and dry mediums such as oil paint and charcoal.

He returns regularly to Florence to teach, alongside his teaching at London Fine Art Studios and as a visiting tutor to Atelier Tremlett in Lewes. Painting from life, Jack is keen for the works to be influenced by the ever changing variation of nature, constantly editing designs and re-evaluating whilst painting.
