[How many of Taiwan’s languages are endangered?]
What does Taiwan have in common with Hawaii, New Zealand, Malaysia and Madagascar? All of these countries are home to people who speak Austronesian languages. In fact, many places can trace their language roots back to Taiwan.
Today, we celebrate International Mother Language Day (February 21), by focusing on one of Taiwan’s most endangered languages -- that of the Hla’alua people.
