Taylor Poulin, 21, is arraigned in Waltham District Court on charges connected to the March 20 shooting death of Tyler Zanco, 17.
Poulin pleaded not guilty, and was ordered held on $500,000 bail.
Prosecutor David Solet explained in court that Poulin allegedly brought a loaded gun to a Gardencrest drug deal and struck Zanco in the head with it. Another man, Domingo Mendes, 22, then allegedly shot and killed Zanco. Mendes remains at large.
According to the Middlesex DA, a new charge--possession of a firearm during the commission of felony--has been added to existing charges: assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlicensed possession of a firearm and conspiracy to violate drug laws.
In court, prosecutor David Solet explained that the new charge "is punishable by a maximum sentence of life imprisonment with a minimum sentence of 5 years in the state prison."
After the arraignment, Taylor Poulin's attorney described his client as a victim who was tazed by Zanco. A Waltham police affidavit includes allegations that Zanco and two WHS friends planned a drug ripoff as retaliation against Poulin, who allegedly cheated Zanco's cousin out of 2 ounces of marijuana.
The affidavit said, "[Zanco] wanted to rip off and beat up [Poulin] for this incident with his cousin."
Poulin's next court appearance is May 7.
