Claude Frollo: "And he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!"
Ah yes, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, another gem within Disney's cave. This movie is filled with good writing and character and it's one of those movies that aren't afraid to go dark. One of the best things about this movie is the villain, Judge Claude Frollo.
He was the Belos of the 90s becuase he is written as human and real as possible but he's also completely iredeemable, which is what makes him scary because you know a person like him existed or still exists. The movie spends a good amount of time being inside Frollo's head to show his hypcritical mindset and how it effects the world outside.
He views himself as rightous and just but in truth he only brings misery and fear to Paris, with his hatred for gypsies making him set everything on fire. He only spared Quasimodo because he killed him mother on the stairs of Notre Dame, so he tries to escape God's punishment by raising Quasimodo as his own child, of course he was manupilative and controlling over him. And despite his hatred for gypsies he lusts over Esmeralda, a gypsy, and he his soul goes into conflict between his "rightous" nature and his lust which is best seen on his "Hellfire" song. He chases her to either make her his or kill her, and he takes it out on all Paris.
In the final battle he goes completely off-rails and just doesn't care about God's punishment anymore, he almost burns Esmeralda in front of everyone and the church, he breaks into the church later, wounds the priest and nearly kills Quasimodo and Esmeralda.
One small detail I like is throughout the movie he had normal human skin color and eyes but in his defeat the lighting made it seem like his skin turns grey and his eyes are fire orange, symbolizing that he completely shed every human trait he had left. Really epic stuff.
Frollo is an amazing villain that is full of complexity and is written as human without excusing his actions, and Tony Jay gave his 110% into his role.
Believe it or not, I completed this video within a day. I was super motivated and just went for it. I didn't rush it and the result is something I'm happy with.
Next two videos are gonna be Hero Factory and another Disney villain.
