The Trolley Museum of New York was founded and opened in 1955 as a non-profit organization entirely volunteer operated, allowing people of all types of generations to be able to see preserved rapid transit equipment from throughout many different periods of time, both out of the New York area and beyond, rail and bus. The museums latest edition to their lineup is Société Franco-Belge CQ310 car 510, which was trucked from Atlanta's subway system known as MARTA, and retired in 2007 due to being a single car instead of a married pair car, which meant it was obsolete to the system. It was retired with its as-delivered scheme on both sides, featuring the vibrant MARTA colors trains don't have today. The museums most famous subway car, R16 6398, was built by ACF in 1955 and was retired by the MTA in 1987. It made its last trip on the M line, and during its final run, one of the museums most impactful contributors after riding it that day had spent the majority of his life working to preserve the car for generations to come since then. In that set, also featured now-preserved R16 car 6387, which still operates for the NYTM today. The museum also features other preserved MTA subway cars such as a currently covered up Low-V motor car. It was covered up due to its condition and protecting it from the elements until restoration. It was the final mostly intact passenger-ready Low-V car left on MTA property, and after removal had left the system with no other Low-V's not converted for work service, or scrapped. Close by the R16 is a preserved ACF R4 825, which was specifically built for the IND as part of the identical "Arnine" family before the systems unification and also got IRT signage fitted onto it, which is erroneous for this type of car. There is also the only other BMT Q-type left in existence after the cosmetically restored one that is currently held in the NYTM today. Unlike that Q-type, however, this car is severely damaged and in need of urgent repairs, which is why it is located in a shed. These cars were converted from BU Gate Cars, which is why their bodies are wood but their fronts are steel. Behind it is also the only other PATH car preserved from the attacks on the WTC, which is the last St. Louis PA1 car left in existence. This car is somewhat damaged on one side of the car and was directly located behind the also now-preserved Hawker-Siddeley PA3 leading car, which is located in a different museum. The PA1 however is a B car, which means it doesn't have a cab. It was almost not preserved by the museum for this reason, but due to its significance as a survivor and as the last PA1, it was kept as a result. Aside from subway cars, there is also three RTS-06 buses, one specifically being from the MTA's NYCT bus division, out of the 1998-99 RTS-06 fleet that was retired fully in 2019 as the last RTS fleet. This bus is numbered 4901, and was preserved under an individuals title, but donated straight to the museum due to the MTA not letting buses be privately owned after retirement. It still features its Jamaica Depot bus stickers, which is the depot that this unit retired under before being sent to Eastchester scrap line. While this bus is operational, there is also two non-operational RTS-06's, numbered 1070 and 702 respectively. 1070 is painted all white and is accessible inside, while 702 is not able to be entered and is only on display, like 4901. There is even an MBTA PCC streetcar, which used to operate on the Mattapan Line, which still until this day operates a variation of PCC streetcars as their soul primary fleet. Despite all of the displayed rail fleet, even trams and trolleys not mentioned not being operational, there is a publicly accessible diesel-converted tram that operates throughout the museums active trackage, which can be ridden with museum admission. Sometimes for events, the museum may even bring out a preserved locomotive pulling one of their preserved rapid transit cars. With the help of museum visits and donations, the museum can continue and does continue to constantly restore its fleet and maintain history for generations to come.
*As bonus content, there also features a few clips of some various GE Genesis locomotives, two of which are heritage locomotives for the Metro-North, fitting in with the historic theme with this videos museum footage! #mtasubway #mtabus #trolleymuseumofnewyork
