The Orbs of the Prophets, or Tears, from Bajor are strange creations from the Wormhole Aliens that were sent, possibly accidently to the Bajorans thousands of years ago. Bajor's lore says that they are there to facilitate communion with the Prophets, but are they simply probes for these temporal beings? Let's take a look at the Star Trek lore, from Deep Space Nine to the comics and books to explore all the known orbs and their functions. How do they work, what are they made from and why do they exist?
