Wounds can be classified as either open or closed skin wounds. Closed skin wounds mean the skin is still intact, whereas open skin wounds mean the skin is no longer intact and has been broken/cut.
Closed skin wounds include the following: contusion, hematoma, blister, frostbite. In some cases, burns (1st degree) and pressure injuries (stage 1) are also considered closed wounds, but become open wounds in later phases.
Open skin wounds include the following: abrasion, laceration, incision, skin tears, puncture wounds, penetrating wounds, avulsion, burns, pressure injuries, and venous/arterial ulcers.
