In this special ANZAC Day tribute, we journey to the heart of the Tiwi Islands to uncover the often-overlooked stories of courage, sacrifice, and service by the Tiwi people during times of war — especially during the Second World War.
Filmed at the 2025 Dawn Service in Wurrumiyanga, this video honours not only the ANZAC legacy but also the unique and vital role played by Aboriginal men from Bathurst and Melville Islands. From rescuing downed Allied pilots to supporting military operations as coastwatchers and transport crew, the Tiwi contribution remains a powerful yet often forgotten chapter of Australia’s wartime story.
Among the many who preserve and pass on these stories is Sr. Anne Gardiner, whose deep connection with the Tiwi people has kept these memories alive. This film shares just one of the many stories from her well of wisdom — a reminder that living history continues through those who remember.
Through prayer, reflection, and community remembrance, we also honour Mathias Ullungura, the first Aboriginal man to capture a Japanese soldier on Australian soil and acknowledge the cultural strength and resilience that continues to guide the Tiwi people today.
Join us in remembering these untold stories, as we honour all who served — especially those whose names may never appear in history books, but whose legacy lives on in the land and hearts of the Tiwi Islands.
Lest we forget.
