오봉 정사제 관련 고문서 일괄(보성군 향토 문화유산) / Obong Jeong Saje-related Historical Documents

보성군은 녹차의 고장이자 호남 의병의 중심 거점으로 임진왜란, 정유재란때부터 일제강점기까지 777명의 의병이 활동한 의병의 고장이다.
조상 대대로 충절을지킨 가통을 이어 전라좌의병으로 맹활약했던 의병이 있는데 그분이 바로 오봉 정사제 선생이며 정사제 선생과 관련한 고문서들이 보성군 향토문화유산으로 지정되어 있다.
정사제 선생은 임진왜란이 일어난 후 모친상을 당한 상중에도 전라좌도 의병장 임계영의 종사관으로 활동해 장수, 거창, 등지에서 최경회와 연합하여 함께 싸웠고 추풍령을 넘어 영남의병 정인홍 의병군을 지원하고 소상진, 최억남과 합세한 전투에서 승전해 4백여명의 포로를 구출하며 성주와 개령을 수복하는 공을 세웠다.
그러나 안타깝게도 남원 광한루에서 적의 기습을 받아 적과 대치하며 전투하던 중 유탄에 맞아 순절했는데 그때 선생의 나이 39세였다.
오봉 정사제 선생은 임종 직전 ‘인간세상 충효 소원 이루지 못하고 구천으로 돌아가려니 한이 더욱 그지없네 (未了人間 忠孝願 九原歸路 恨悠悠)’라는 임절시를 남겼는데 선생의 애국충절과 헌신은 후대에 걸쳐 높이 평가받아, 1754년에는 홍문관 부수찬의 증직이 내려졌으며, 이후 1868년 도승지 홍문관 대제학에 이어 1884년에는 이조참판에 추증되며 그의 공로와 위상이 재차 재조명되었다.
오봉 정사제 선생의 유물로는 교지 3점과 서적으로는 고려사, 경인보 진주정씨 족보, 오봉선생 문집, 이충무공전서가 있고 문서로는 정충사 홀기 등이 있으며 이충무공전서 책 뒷머리에 오봉 정사제 후손인 정종암이 이순신 장군의 보성 활동 내용과 부인방태평의 이름을 등을 기록해 놓은 것을 볼 수 있다.
오봉 가문의 학문적 전통과 역사 위에 회자되고 전승된 설화를 서사적으로 기록한 오봉 정사제 관련 고문서들은 보성군의 향토문화유산으로서 그 가치가 부족함이 없다.


Boseong-gun is renowned as the home of green tea and a central stronghold of the Honam region’s righteous armies (uibyeong). From the Imjin War (Japanese Invasions of Korea, 1592–1598) through the Japanese colonial period, the region saw the active participation of 777 righteous army volunteers, upholding a legacy of loyalty and patriotism.
Among these figures is Obong Jeong Saje, a prominent leader of the Jeolla Left Righteous Army (Jeolla Jwado Uibyeong), who upheld his family’s tradition of loyalty across generations. A collection of historical documents related to him has been designated as a Local Cultural Heritage of Boseong-gun.
Following the outbreak of the Imjin War, despite mourning his mother’s death, Jeong Saje served as a military aide (jongsagwan) under Righteous Army Commander Im Gye-yeong of the Jeolla Left Righteous Army. He fought alongside Choe Gyeonghoe in battles at Jangsu, Geochang, and other regions, crossed Chupungnyeong Pass to support the Yeongnam Righteous Army under Jeong Inhong, and later joined forces with So Sangjin and Choe Eoknam. Through these engagements, he achieved victories, rescuing over 400 captives and reclaiming Seongju and Gaeryeong.
Tragically, during a surprise enemy attack at Gwanghallu in Namwon, Jeong Saje fought fiercely before being struck by a projectile, sacrificing his life at the age of 39. On his deathbed, he left behind a final farewell poem (imjeolsi), expressing his unfulfilled aspirations for loyalty and filial piety: "未了人間 忠孝願 九原歸路 恨悠悠"
"Unable to fulfill my wish for loyalty and filial piety in this world, I return to the underworld with endless regret."
His patriotism and dedication were widely honored in later generations. In 1754, he was posthumously bestowed the title of Deputy Director (Busuchan) of the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors). His contributions were further recognized in 1868, when he was posthumously appointed Senior Royal Secretary (Doseungji) and Chief Scholar (Daejehak) of the Hongmungwan, and again in 1884, when he was elevated to Minister of Personnel (Ijo Champan), reaffirming his contributions and historical significance.
The surviving relics of Obong Jeong Saje include three royal edicts (gyoji) and literary works such as the History of Goryeo (Goryeosa), Genealogy of the Jinju Jeong Clan (Gyeonginbo Jinju Jeongssi Jokbo), Collected Works of Obong (Obong Seonsaeng Munjip), and Complete Works of Yi Chungmugong (Yi Chungmugong Jeonseo). Additional documents include the Record of the Shrine of Loyalty (Jeongchungsa Holgi). Notably, in the postscript of the Yi Chungmugong Jeonseo, Jeong Saje’s descendant Jeong Jongam recorded Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s activities in Boseong, as well as the name of his wife, Bang Taepyeong.
The Obong Jeong Saje-related Historical Documents, which chronicle the scholarly traditions, historical heritage, and oral legends passed down through the Obong family, are an invaluable Local Cultural Heritage of Boseong-gun, worthy of preservation and recognition.
