In this video I show how to apply & trim a pair of Goodyear protective half soles onto a pair of leather soled shoes. Often times higher quality shoes will come with leather soles, but the wet and snowy weather around here is terrible for leather soled shoes. Most people aren't willing to wear shoe rubbers, so I feel this is an economical and smart solution. A pack of six pairs of new Goodyear protective half soles are available on eBay for around $20. I used DAP Weldwood Contact Cement, available in small bottles at Walmart, or larger cans at your local big box home improvement store. After applying the glue to both of the shoe and the half sole, I let the glue dry for around 10 minutes, per the instructions on the can. If the leather sole is brand-new, you may need to scuff it up a bit if it's too smooth. If the soles are extremely worn, these will be difficult to apply properly, as the first place the sole of the shoe wears is at the corners at the tip of the toe. In other words, the edge of the sole will no longer have a squared edge, but will have a rounded edge. If the sole of the shoe is too rounded, you may not be able to get the half sole to adhere to the curve at he tip of the toe. Notice the blade of the utility knife is curved, this helps it follow the contour of the shoe. Trimming the half sole is not as easy as it looks! It took me at least a dozen tries before I got decent at it. FYI sorry this video is in 3 parts. This was uploaded before YouTube allowed me to upload longer videos.
