GetSportsFocus.com - Week #4 Game of the Week proved to be the most exciting one yet. The Menlo-Atherton Bears came in the game having lost the last three consecutive matches against the visiting St. Ignatius Wildcats. The Bears had a game plan this time however and ran a very discipline offense and a solid defense that forced the Wildcats to make errors. SI compiled over a hundred yards of penalties which helped M-A defeat the defending CCS Open Division Champions.
Bears senior Isiah Nash made the Play of the Game and was awarded the Game of the Week #PlayMaker t-shirt after scoring three TDs with about 150 yards rushing for the night.
Brian Keare, the M-A QB was near perfect as he led the Bears offensive attack with over 300 yards passing and 2 TDs both to Nash. He also had a long 43 yard bomb to his favorite receiver Spiro Papadakis to set up Nash's third TD of the night. Keare was awarded the Game of the Week #MVP t-shirt and was pretty pumped to introduce his team's highlight at the end.
SI fought to the end however putting together a scoring drive late in the fourth and executing a perfect on-side-kick right after that gave the ball back with over a minute left on the game clock. But the Wildcats' would commit two consecutive penalties which made it a lot difficult for junior QB Ryan Hagfeldt to put together a game winning drive.
M-A secondary played well especially in the closing minutes of the game. Cornerback Randy Lopez made two big stops for the Bears while the Wildcats were on their hurry-up offense going for a come-back win. Lopez brought down SI's star RB Elijah Dale on a two point conversion attempt that caught the Bears defense off guard as the fumbled snap ended up in Dale's possession. Dale looked as if he had an open lane to take it in but Lopez came from behind and took care of business for M-A.
Lopez ended SI's game winning drive by batting a pass from Hagfeldt away that was intended for Joe Lang.
Final score 21-16, Menlo-Atherton improves its record to 2-1 while SI head in to a bye week to get ready for WCAL play against St. Francis at home on October 5th with an 0-3 record.
