Georg Busslinger's group focuses on the epithelial cell biology of the human gastrointestinal tract, specifically the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. These organs carry out coordinated functions essential for digestion and nutrient absorption, supported by specialized epithelial cells with rapid turnover and continuous renewal. Disruptions in gastrointestinal homeostasis are associated with common digestive diseases, including esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, gastritis, and Crohn’s disease, which can increase the risk of gastrointestinal cancers. The group is particularly interested in the mechanisms underlying these diseases, as esophageal and gastric cancers remain highly aggressive with limited treatment options.
