More rust. Volkswagen Beetle restoration part 30

In this episode, I start blocking out the body filler and sanding the roof using 180-grit sandpaper. While working on the quarter panel, I came across a small pinhole in the metal. I tried welding it up, but the metal was so thin and rusty that the hole just kept getting bigger. Eventually, I decided it wasn’t worth saving and that the best option was to replace that section completely.

I headed over to a local VW shop here in Salem, Oregon called Autocraft. They’ve got kind of a junkyard-style setup with a ton of old parts, plus they carry new ones too. I found a replacement section—it’s not the exact year, but I’m going to see if I can make it work.

Later on, I turned the bug around and started sanding the driver-side rear quarter panel. I uncovered some rust holes along the bottom and found old body filler from previous repairs. So, more surprises—but that’s part of the process.
