I want to agree but not sure I can. As Spirit continues its inevitable implosion over the next quarter or two, there will be ~3,700 experienced high jet time pilots out on the street desperate to maintain their lifestyle inflation, even if that means working as a low seniority FO at a regional. That many pilots could be the sum of hiring in an average year. Everything I hear seems to indicate that inflation is edging back up while the economy is slowing. Air travel is down as well from reports I’ve heard.
Not a shortage nor a spree in my view. The current hiring market can only be described as a "bare minimum, cherry picking style interviewing and hiring just to maintain the respective recruitment department and pipeline" type of environment. Major schools have more CFIs than students. Every 2nd CFI I know can't find enough work to pay his / her loans. Minimums across 91 and 135 worlds were raised significantly across the board, some for insurance, but most just because they can. Pilots with over 3000 total hours and 1000+ turbine are having to apply for pipeline, jump, and survey gigs to pay their bills. I personally know a dozen or so recruiters across majors / regionals / charters, and every one has the same story - very slow, almost stalled hiring pipeline, thousands of pending resumes from overqualified pilots in most cases. CJO holders are having to wait over a year for their class date. We still see airlines failing in 2025, who would have thought. The newly ATP qualified folk are simply SOL at this stage. I don't mean to spill the doom and gloom here, but it sure feels like it. And I've heard enough about the industry being cyclical....blah blah blah, tell it to thousands of fresh CFIs that were attracted to the industry with lies, and now owe the school $150k+ and are having to moonlight at McDonalds to afford a bunk somewhere while the bills are piling up with no work to be found to save a life. Buckle up everybody, and realistically speaking, give it a year or two for things to hopefully stabilize or resume in any meaningful fashion. Just my 2-cents. I love the positivity of the host though, keep that up, we all need it.
