The village has a Benedictine nunnery founded by the Countess Judith of Lens, niece of William the Conqueror, in the year 1078. The nunnery, now known as Elstow Abbey, was once considered one of the 14th-century wealthiest nunneries. It also reminds us of the baptism of preacher John Bunyan. Four Henlow
Chances are those picture postcards of rural villages with a great pub and an unbelievably easy London commute were taken in Henlow. In this Pretty spot, there’s a 13th-century church that conspicuously beautifies the village square. Grade I listed parish church of St Mary the Virgin is a wonder to behold. We learned about the village’s historical connections to the Mayflower Pilgrims. Pilgrims Elizabeth Tilley and Henry Samson were baptized at this church before sailing on the Mayflower. Henlow is also well-connected—Arlesey station is just a stone’s throw away.
There are as many as three pubs in Henlow. The Crown where you can book gastro with rooms can make your go-to list for a tasty high-end Sunday lunch plus a good wine list. The Crown also runs special events like taco and margarita nights. The Engineer’s Arms hosts a gin festival while The Five Bells is a more trad pub. The Koi Café is spot on for brunch and caffeine.
