An ear abscess is a collection of pus that forms in or around the ear due to infection. It can occur in different parts of the ear, including:
External Ear (Otitis Externa or “Swimmer’s Ear”) – Abscesses can form in the skin of the ear canal.
Middle Ear (Otitis Media with Mastoiditis) – Infection can spread from the middle ear to the mastoid bone behind the ear, leading to an abscess.
Ear Lobe (Piercing-Related or Trauma) – Abscesses here often result from infected piercings or local injury.
Common Symptoms
Pain, swelling, or redness in or around the ear
Warmth or tenderness
Drainage of pus or fluid
Fever or chills (if the infection is more serious)
Hearing loss or muffled hearing (if middle ear involved)
Causes
Bacterial infections (most common)
Infected ear piercings
Trauma or foreign object in the ear
Complications from untreated ear infections
Treatment
Medical drainage – The abscess may need to be lanced and drained by a healthcare professional.
Antibiotics – Oral or topical antibiotics are commonly prescribed.
Pain relief – Over-the-counter meds like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Warm compress – Can help with pain and swelling.
If untreated, an ear abscess can lead to more serious complications like hearing loss, cellulitis, or even infection spread to the skull or brain.
