[4K] China Field Investigation: Why Did Village Super League Recover So Quickly After Deadly Floods?

I’m Mimi, an Australian journalist utterly captivated by Rural China and its rich, vibrant ethnic cultures. Today I’m heading to Rongjiang County in Guizhou — home of China’s most viral event: the Village Super League, or Cunchao.

In June, Rongjiang was hit by two massive floods, a once-in-a-century disaster. But Cunchao came back in just 28 days. How did the people here recover and rebuild so quickly? Let’s find out.
I participated in the 2024 Global South Academic Forum last year, where I met many warm-hearted people who all share the dream of Cun Chao. I’m following my friend Lanlan, who’s preserving traditional Batik culture and running her own shop next to Cunchao stadium. I’m going to try the full wax-dyeing process. Then, I’m going to explore the “Love Village” with Chen Kaihua, the leader of Toutang Village, before I go off-roading through the mountains and try some authentic local barbecue. I’ll also visit Master Hu of the Dong Grand Choirs to learn about the beauty and history behind their music.
And of course, I’ll check out the Village Super League. Stepping onto the field, you can feel the energy of the cheerleaders, while the parade showcases local traditions. The matches are intense, and the voices of the village children fill the air. So come with me and uncover the secret of this rural Chinese village. Let’s go!
