In art history, the High Renaissance, approximately 1495-1520, was a brief period of brilliant artistic production in the Italian states. Great artistic achievements were particularly strong in Rome, the capital of the Papal States and in Florence. Some of the most noted artists, architects, and sculptors of this time period were Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante. They in part were responsible for significant achievements made during this era including advancements in linear perspective, realistic depictions of both physical and psychological features, along with the use of chiaroscuro and sfumato. These attainments along with work of some of the most gifted artists of the High Renaissance will be discussed in this docent-led talk.
