If you’re looking for Com Tam Vietnamese street food or broken rice Saigon Street food, this Vietnam foodie travel vlog video is for you. Today, I’m comparing Com Tam, a popular Vietnamese street food, at two different price points ($2 vs $14) in Saigon, Vietnam.

Com Tam is a staple street food in Vietnam. It's eaten for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and as a late-night meal. Com Tam literally means broken rice, as the imperfect rice kernels don't stick together nicely like regular rice and act like a sponge to soak up all the flavors of the flame grilled sweet lemongrass pork chop, the fried egg, and other fatty rich accompaniments, including the sweet and spicy fish sauce. Make sure to watch until the end to see my BAOROMETER rating.

Com Tam has become popular in Vietnam's southern provinces, particularly Saigon, since the country's urbanization in the first half of the twentieth century. When Saigon was teeming with visitors from all over the world, food vendors tweaked Com Tam to make it more appealing to foreigners like the French, Americans, Chinese, and Indians.

Due to their economic situation, Com Tam was once a favorite dish among poor rice farmers in the Mekong Delta. These people didn't have enough nice rice to sell during bad rice seasons, so they cooked using broken rice. Broken rice is made up of fragments of rice grains that have been broken during the handling process and was once considered poor rice. Broken rice was employed mainly because it was readily available in the farmers' homes and could keep them full for an extended period of time.
