Picosecond lasers and Q-Switched lasers are the main lasers for laser tattoo removal but what is the difference between Picosecond lasers and Q Switched lasers. Picosecond lasers promised to remove a tattoo in half the time but that didn't happen. It still takes over 10 sessions.
The main difference between picosecond lasers and Q switched lasers is the rate at which the emit the laser beam.
The picosecond lasers are newer and fire in Picoseconds a trillionth of a second range while Q-Switched fore in Nanoseconds or a billionth of a second.
Aside from that they both try to achieve the same goal, removing a tatooo but what are the major differences and is one better than the other.
Q Switched , Nanosecond lasers are photoacoustic and the laser hits the ink, quickly then is gone, an audible snap is detected which shatters the ink into small particles where the immune cells remove it and go to the lymphatic system for clearance.
Q Switched lasers act like sledgehammers smashing the ink. Picosecond lasers work like a fine chisel and create a fine dust of ink. That fine dust was thought to make life easier on the immune system and thus decrease the number of laser tattoo sessions in half, meaning 4-6.
However that didnt happen, the fine dust process did not remove enough ink to make a difference and the process was actually longer thus its recommended you start with the Q Switched laser then after 4-5 sessions go to the Pico if yo desire.
I personally dont do that, I use Q Switches the entire time.
Initially they also thought the Pico would create even less heat and result in a safer procedure with less chance of burning or pigment issues. Again that was not the case and the duration between procedures for a fair skin person was increased from 6 weeks to 12, longer in darker skin tones.
