Jesus undergoes three tests in the wilderness. Typically called the temptations, they are better understood as tests. The tests are not about right and wrong, but the tests one performs to reveal the identity of a thing. Jesus was given his identity as the Beloved in his baptism and immediately that is tested in the wilderness. Indeed, we are all tested in our identity: Do we trust we are enough as the beloved or do we trust in what the world says makes us worthy: safety and security, power and control, esteem and affection. Lent is about knowing who we are?
