Ambient Sketch Diary #4
In this 4th diary, I’m exploring Serum’s modulation LFOs to create an ambient, glitchy sequence using the Serum preset “Dust of Eternity” from the Signs of Life – Ancient Technologies 3 pack.
Here’s how the patch is moving:
LFO 1 is attached to Oscillator A Level and Filter 1 cutoff, giving the main sequence a soft, shifting texture.LFO 2 is always a triangle attached to Filter 1 Cutoff. So basically 2 LFOs on the filter adding to the random variation.
LFO 3 is attached to Oscillator B Level and Noise Level, adding subtle, random variations that make the sound feel alive and slightly unpredictable.
Also there is an LFO 4, a Sine wave and free running used for panning., attached to OSC A Pan and OSC B pan.
Lastly an LFO 5, Sample and Hold and, all the way smooth, is attched to the wavetable position of OSC A.
I actually created 3 variations as you see in the video of the above setup, giving that unpredictability and different glitchy sounds. Mostly on LFO 1. I hope you like the end result. Basically the experiment never ends.
I also added a Pigments Pad "Dawn Bringer" from Chromatic 4 Pack- Signs of Life to create the atmospheric layer in A minor. I didnt bother to do the progression but an easy one usually I'm doing is to go to D minor ] thus 8 bars A minor and 8 bars D minor.
As an extra layer on pads I added this new ambient plugin SOL (Signs of Life) it really gives an ambient - deep space characteristic (something like that.....xaxax!.....this guy is amazing by the way really big fan of him).
Massive X presets handle the noise and background textures. Using the Massive X Player, I can randomize parameters to add motion and subtle variation without much thinking. It is actually great for noise layers and drones. (well....basically for everything including pads but i prefer pigments for pads)
I find it much easier to play and customize already excellent presets in Serum, especially when targeting ambient textures. Small modulation tweaks, slow rates, and subtle automation can transform a preset into something unique while keeping the core character intact. Also there are excellent for guys like me with no experience to understand how the modulation works.
This is more of a sketch than a finished track — a snapshot of experimentation and learning. I’m still in “watch tutorials → try stuff → break things → accidentally like the result” mode 😄
Serum makes modulation feel visual and playful, which is perfect for exploring textures and happy accidents in sound design. Unfortunately, I forgot to enable the FX section this time, which normally adds most of the polish — ping-pong delay, convolution reverb, and subtle modulation usually give the sequence its spacious, immersive feel. Without it, the patch sounds a bit raw and exposed, but I still think it’s a fun sketch of what the preset can do! 😄
