"A Night in Tunisia" - Remembering Dizzy Gillespie by Alberto Di Leone & Gaetano Partipilo (1° set)

Il grande ed inimitabile John Birks Gillespie, detto Dizzy è stato trombettista, pianista e compositore jazz ma fu anche cantante, percussionista e bandleader di eccezionale livello.
Per molti appassionati della musica jazz, Dizzy era un simpatico mattatore dei palcoscenici , anche in virtù della sua particolare tromba modificata, ma è doveroso sottolineare che con il mitico Charlie Parker fu, negli anni quaranta, uno degli inventori e delle figure chiave del bebop e del jazz moderno.
In seguito, grazie ai suoi innumerevoli concerti tenuti in ogni parte del mondo con le sue band, ha lavorato anche con John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Kenny Clarke , Ray Brown, Charlie Mingus, Max Roach, Bud Powell, Chet Baker, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin e Chaka Khan.
Un giorno ebbe ad affermare quanto segue: "Le Scritture mi hanno fatto comprendere sotto una nuova luce il piano di Dio per la nostra epoca, la verità dell'unità di Dio, la verità dell'unità dei profeti, la verità dell'unità del genere umano. Ecco, è questo che ho imparato: Esiste un parallelo tra il jazz e la religione."

The great and inimitable John Birks Gillespie, known as Dizzy, was a jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer, but he was also an exceptional singer, percussionist, and bandleader.
For many jazz fans, Dizzy was a charming stage presence, thanks in part to his distinctive modified trumpet. However, it's important to note that, along with the legendary Charlie Parker, he was, in the 1940s, one of the inventors and key figures of bebop and modern jazz. Later, thanks to his countless concerts around the world with his bands, he also worked with John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Kenny Clarke and Ray Brown, Charlie Mingus, Max Roach, Bud Powell, Chet Baker, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Chaka Khan.
One day he stated the following: "The Scriptures have given me a new understanding of God's plan for our time, the truth of God's unity, the truth of the unity of the prophets, the truth of the unity of the human race. This is what I've learned: There is a parallel between jazz and religion."
