Jaundice is a condition where the skin and eyes turn yellow due to high levels of bilirubin in the blood, often caused by liver problems.

Bile Sludge: Accumulation of thickened bile material.
Bacterial Infection: Infection leading to inflammation and obstruction.
Tumor Growth: cancerous growth compressing or invading the stent.
Scar Tissue: Formation of scar tissue around the stent.
Clotting: blood clots form within the stent.

Plastic Stents:
Temporary Solution: Typically used for short-term relief.
Cost-Effective: Less expensive than metal stents.
Easier to Replace: More easily removed or replaced if necessary.
Metal Stents:
Self-Expanding Metal Stents (SEMS): These stents expand on their own once placed in the bile duct.
Longer Lasting: More durable and suitable for long-term use.
Higher Patency Rates: Less likely to become blocked over time compared to plastic stents.

5:13 How to identify that jaundice has recovered after stenting?
Reduction in Yellowing: Skin and Eyes: The yellow discoloration of the skin and the whites of the eyes fade.
Normalising Bilirubin Levels: Blood Tests: Bilirubin levels in the blood return to the normal range (0.1–1.2 mg/dL for total bilirubin).
Dark Urine and Pale Stools: The urine colour becomes lighter, and the stools return to a normal brown colour.

To diagnose jaundice, doctors use blood tests (bilirubin levels, liver function tests), urine tests (bilirubin, urobilinogen), and imaging tests (ultrasound, CT scan, MRI). Additional tests include a liver biopsy for tissue analysis and endoscopic procedures like ERCP and EUS to examine and treat bile duct obstructions.
