Inspired by the KORG Mono/Poly—which was produced from 1981-1984—the new Multi/Poly module deploys KORG’s Virtual Voice Card tech to model analog hardware components. What it means is, well, inconsistency—but it’s musical unpredictability that replicates the subtle behavioral imperfections of analog oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs and portamento circuits. The cool concept here is that you can luxuriate in the full-on warm textures of ’80s-style synthesis, or you can diminish the analog imperfections to create more modern-sounding tones.

Scoops from the KORG booth: “The tonal possibilities of the Multi/Poly are endless. If you’re familiar with the KORG modwave, the Multi/Poly interface has the modwave matrix and the KAOSS pad. We’re not exactly going for a reissue, but at the same time, people who like analog sounds but maybe want to do a little more on the modulation side are going to find themselves right at home here. I really like the blend of East Coast and West Coast synthesizers. Each oscillator has three modes—classic, digital and waveshaper. Classic is what you’d expect when going with East Coast style analog waveshapes—your sawtooth, pulse and square. When you get into the digital wavetables that opens up the West Coast-style synthesis stuff.”
