It's taken me a few years, but I finally have my gardening "uniform."
Join me for this video to hear what I wear out to work in the garden, and why. This is more a chat about categories of clothing than mentioning every item by specific brand and sku. See below for a list of places that I source from.
SPECIFIC SOURCES: (No company is sponsoring my recommendations, but I do receive commission if you buy via these links; I'd really appreciate the support!)
1. Carhartt - canvas jackets and overshirts, pants, overalls, and coveralls
Coveralls: Here's a link to the my fantastic coveralls; they come in tall!) https://sovrn.co/gije49g
2. Duluth Trading - overalls, pants, short coveralls, shorts, wicking shirts (I love most everything from Duluth, and DT pieces make the majority of my garden uniform, especially in summer.
Warm Weather Overalls: https://sovrn.co/ixbwo0d
Cool Weather Overalls: https://sovrn.co/1heuvpn
Shortalls: https://sovrn.co/am65xdw
Perfect Garden Shorts (not a shorts gal, but these are awesome): https://sovrn.co/u4tj2ye
Airy Hemp duster - the best summer layer: https://sovrn.co/fapq2bx
3. Muck Boots (My husband and I both have the Chore midrise boot but there are multiple good silhouettes here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/tessapinn...
4. Blundstone Boots (My husband and I both wear the original 500 series for garden work, but the they make dressier options too, see here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/tessapinn...
5. Tilley for lifetime quality sun hats - I have the ultralight sun hat and my husband has worn a Tilley Endurables at all times for the last 10+ years, both linked here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/tessapinn...
6. Block Shop Textiles for 100% cotton scarves. These are sustainably handmade by artisans, with so many fun patterns here (not affiliate; just adore them!) : https://www.blockshoptextiles.com/col...
7. Vaer for my indestructible all-terrain watch: https://www.vaerwatches.com/products/... (comes in two sizes which is great for a more petite lady wrist)
GENERAL SOURCES:
Thrifted or secondhand items; local shops, or I get a lot at Postmark. It's overwhelming at first, but remember... you're looking at measurements, garment construction, and fiber content (e.g. 100% linen, cotton, etc.) NOT at specific sizes or brand names.
Jackets, collared shirts, and vintage sweaters are mostly what I look for secondhand.
A few activewear companies offer occasional classic silhouettes with more performance attributes, like wicking and venting. Columbia and Prana are two that I have found good options from.
TALL SOURCES:
The men's section... things can be tailored or sometimes an oversized fit is just right. For instance, I have perfect linen and outerwear "shacket" options from the company Quince that are technically men's. This is a favorite: https://www.quince.com/men/double-bru...
Duluth and Carhartt both carry tall pants/overalls. They're not extremely long, but I find with a high boot, they pretty much do the trick.
I get almost all of my fitted collared long sleeve shirts from JCrew. I opt for denim, less dressy cotton, and linen here. Sometimes having a long enough sleeve without the extra man room is just nice.
